Move-Out Cleaning Checklist: Don't Lose Your Security Deposit

By Ricardo James

Moving out can be a stressful experience, but a thorough cleaning is one of the most important steps to ensure you get your full security deposit back. Landlords expect the property to be in the same condition as when you moved in, minus normal wear and tear. This checklist will guide you through the process, room by room, to leave your old home spotless.

Before You Start

  • Gather Your Supplies: You’ll need all-purpose cleaner, glass cleaner, degreaser, oven cleaner, sponges, microfiber cloths, a vacuum cleaner, a mop, a bucket, and plenty of trash bags.
  • Start with an Empty Space: It's much easier to clean when all your belongings are already moved out.
  • Work from Top to Bottom: Clean from the ceiling down to the floors to avoid having to re-clean surfaces.

Kitchen

The kitchen often requires the most attention due to grease and food buildup.

  • Appliances: Clean the refrigerator and freezer inside and out, including shelves and drawers. Clean the oven, stovetop, and exhaust fan. Don't forget the dishwasher and microwave.
  • Cabinets and Drawers: Wipe down the inside and outside of all cabinets and drawers.
  • Countertops and Sink: Scrub countertops and disinfect the sink and faucet.
  • Floors: Sweep and mop the floors, paying special attention to corners.

Bathrooms

Bathrooms are another critical area. Focus on sanitizing and removing soap scum and mildew.

  • Toilet, Sink, and Tub/Shower: Thoroughly clean and disinfect all surfaces.
  • Mirrors and Fixtures: Clean mirrors and polish faucets and fixtures.
  • Cabinets and Drawers: Wipe down all storage areas.
  • Floors: Sweep and mop.

Living Areas and Bedrooms

  • Walls and Baseboards: Wipe down walls, baseboards, and remove any scuff marks.
  • Windows: Clean interior windows and windowsills.
  • Closets: Wipe down shelves and remove all belongings.
  • Floors: Vacuum carpets thoroughly. If necessary, consider getting them professionally cleaned. Sweep and mop hard surface floors.

General Throughout the House

  • Dust all surfaces: light fixtures, ceiling fans, and blinds.
  • Clean all doors and doorframes.
  • Ensure all trash and personal items are removed from the property.

Final Walk-Through

Once you’ve completed your cleaning, do a final walk-through with your landlord if possible. This can help address any issues on the spot and solidify the return of your security deposit. Taking the time to do a thorough move-out cleaning can save you time, money, and headaches in the long run.
